Acupuncture Today posted on article on the disaster relief efforts by Acupuncturists without Borders (AWB) volunteers in response to Super Storm Sandy in New York and New Jersey.  Acupuncturists without Borders trains Licensed Acupuncturists to respond to local, national, and international disasters.  They work with other disaster relief agencies, like the Medical Reserve Corps or the Red Cross, to coordinate efforts when possible.

When someone is experiencing traumatic stress, the body is stuck in survival mode, also called "fight or flight".  "Fight or flight" is another term for the body's sympathetic nervous system response.  When someone is stuck in this survival mode, the symptoms may include:  poor digestion, insomnia, anxiety, depression, flashbacks, running thoughts, nightmares, stress, and other symptoms of shock.

The Acupuncture Today article, posted November 6th, 2012, by Brenda Duran, quoted AWB founder Diana Fried, who said
"Although counseling and talk therapy are important, they cannot address the need alone since severe trauma is a physiological response which becomes locked in the body, and requires a physical intervention to unlock.  The community-style acupuncture treatments provided by Acupuncturists Without Borders serve this function in a way that is low-tech, low-cost, and easy to teach, as well as highly effective."
